British tourists spent 23% more than last year

Tourists visiting Spain in June spent a total of 7,871 million euros while they were here. This represents an increase of 12.7% over the same month in 2015, according to the latest data from the National Statistics Institute.

The average spend per tourist stood at 1,038 euros showing an increase of one euro. The average daily spend per tourist stood at 134 euros, 0.8% higher than the same month in the previous year.

Average length of stay for international tourists was 7.7 days, representing a slight decrease of -0.1 days compared to June 2015.

During the first six months of this year the total tourist expenditure increased by 8.2% over the same period in 2015, reaching 32,685 million euros.

Tourists from the UK contributed the largest portion of expenditure accounting for 23% of the total spend. The Germans accounted for 14.8% and the French accounted for 6.8%.

Spending by UK tourists increased 16.6% on the annual rate. The Germans spent 12.4% more. Tourists from France increased their spending by 19.7%. Visitors from the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden) decreased by 2.9%, while spending by Italians increased by 12.3%.

In the first six months of the year tourists from the UK accounted for 20.6% of all tourist expenditure. The Germans accounted for 14.6% and the Nordic countries 8.6%.

Destinations

The Balearic Islands accounted for the largest accumulated expenditure with 23.7% of the total. Catalonia and Andalusia also grabbed a large proportion of the spending accounting for 22.2% and 14.8% of the total, respectively.

Spending on the Balearic Islands increased by 11.6% on the annual rate. In Catalonia the increase was 3.9% and in Andalusia spending increased by 14.9%.

Other areas worthy of mention include Madrid where tourist spending in June increased 42.1% over the same month in the previous year.

From January to June the community to accumulate the largest proportion of tourist spending was the Canary Islands accounting for 21.6% of the total. Catalonia was close behind with 21.4% of total tourist spending.

Nights

The total number of overnight stays by international visitors in June was over 58.7 million, representing an increase of 11.8%.

The Balearic Islands received the majority of those stays accounting for 23.6% of the total. In June there were more than 13.8 million overnight stays recorded on the islands, an annual increase of 7.2%.

Andalusia followed with 10 million overnight stays, an increase of 15.1%. Catalonia registered 9.8 million overnight stays in June, a decrease of 3.9%.
