Malaga saw over 2 million passengers in July

Malaga Airport closed July having seen record numbers of passengers pass through in its busiest summer yet, according to airport operator AENA.

The number of passengers grew by 11.2% to a massive 2,180,749. This is the first time in its history that the airport has seen more than two million in a single month.

Of course, to handle all those passengers the number of flights also increased. During July 15,575 flights hit the tarmac at Malaga, an annual increase of 10.3%.

The majority of passengers moved on commercial flights. Of those, almost 2 million (1,934,538) travelled on international flights, representing an increase of 11.9% over the same month last year.

Just short of 250,000 passengers were travelling nationally between various Spanish airports. This also represented an annual increase with domestic passenger numbers up 6.3%.

The UK was the main source of international passengers with over 700,000 Brits making their way to Malaga in July. This was 6.3% more than in the same month in 2016. Germany followed with 180,181 travellers. France sent 126,707 passengers while 122,890 were from the Netherlands.

The last Sunday in the month (30th) was the busiest day for both passengers and flight operations. In that one day, the airport handled 78,544 passengers travelling on 553 flight operations.

January to July

2017 has been a record year for Malaga Airport with an cumulative 12.1% increase in the number of flights and a 13.2% increase in passenger numbers, so far.

Over 10.5 million passengers have travelled on over 78,000 flights since the start of the year, with the vast majority being on commercial flights. These figures represent an increase of 14.3% in flight operations and 14.4% in the number of passengers, when compared to the same period in 2016.

Also, the number of domestic travellers since the start of the year has increased by 5.7%.
