Malaga saw 15.1% more passengers in February

Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport recorded 15.1% more passengers in February, and 16.4% more flight operations than in the same month of 2016, according to airport network AENA.

February saw 914,921 passengers travel on 7,364 flights, exceeding last February despite there being only 28 days in the month this year.

The bulk of passengers travelled on commercial flights. Around 75% of those were travelling on international flights, representing growth of 18.7% when compared to the same month in the previous year.

The domestic market also grew with 147,532 passengers travelling between Spanish cities, an increase of 0.5% in passenger traffic. Despite this increase, the actual number of flights on domestic routes fell by 4.4%.

The UK remained as the top source for passengers passing through Malaga airport, with over 280,000 Brits travelling to or from the coastal airport. This represented an increase of 23.5% when compared to the previous year. Germany was next with over 66,000 passengers, while over 55,000 Dutch travellers used the airport.

The last Sunday of the month (26th) was the busiest day for Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport, handling 335 flights and over 45,000 passengers.

Year-to-date

February saw similar growth to figures seen in January with the first two months recording 15.8% more flights and 16.7% more passengers than in the same period in 2016.

Between January and February this year more than 1.7 million passengers have passed through Malaga airport, travelling on almost 15,000 flights, the vast majority of which were commercial. 1.4 million of those passengers travelled on international flights, representing an increase in passenger numbers of 19.8%, and a 21.9% increase in the number of flights.

The number of domestic travellers has also increased across the first two months with 4.3% more passengers, although the number of flights fell by 2.4%, when compared to the same two months in the previous year.
