As summer gets into full swing the hoteliers of Spain are seeing an increase in occupancy and average spend.

There were 34.9 million overnight stays recorded in hotels in June, an 8.9% increase over the same months of 2015. Overnight stays by Spanish residents increased by 1.3%, while stays by non-residents increased by 12.6%.

The average length of stay was also up with an increase of 2.2%, to reach an average stay of 3.5 nights per traveller.

So far in 2016, the cumulative increase in overnight stays has reached 9.3% over the same period last year.

Destinations

Andalusia, Catalonia, Valencia and Madrid are the favourite destinations for travellers resident in Spain, with annual increases in the number of overnight stays of 7.5%, 9.4%, 3.3% and 4.2%, respectively.

The preferred destinations for non-resident travellers was the Balearic Islands which accounted for 35.8% of all overnight stays. On the islands, overnight stays by international travellers increased by 11.9% when compared to June 2015.

The Canary Islands come next accounting for 19.5% of all the overnight stays in June, and showing an annual increase of 17.4%. Catalonia accounted for 17.9% of the total and registered an annual increase of 8.8%.

Hotel Occupancy

Hoteliers recorded an average of 64.6% occupancy (available places) in June, an annual increase of 7.5%. Occupancy by available places on weekends increased by 4.5% to reach 70.3%.

The Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands topped the list of occupancy by available places with 86.6% and 77.6%, respectively. Valencia followed with 66.2%.

The greatest weekend occupancy was seen on the islands of Mallorca with 84.9%, while the Costa del Sol recorded the largest number of overnight stays with more than 2 million.

Travellers Country of Origin

As usual, the UK and Germany accounted for the majority of international travellers visiting Spain in June accounting for 30.7% and 23.7% of the total stays, respectively. The UK market registered and increase of 17.9% while the German market grew by 9.1%.

Overnight stays by French, Italian and Dutch travellers showed annual growth of 11.5%, 10.9% and 15.8%, respectively.

Hotel Prices

The annual rate of the Hotel Price Index (HPI) stood at 5.1% in June, 0.3 points lower than the previous month, and 0.8 points lower than in June 2015.

Hotel prices rose by 8.1% on the Canary Islands, while in Andalusia the increase was 5.6%. The Balearic Islands saw prices increase by 5.1%, while in Catalonia the increase was 4.1%.

By hotel category, there were price increases across the board. Hotels with a five-gold-star rating increased prices by 6.7%, while hotels with four gold stars increased prices by 5.5%. Three gold star establishments increased prices by 4.2%, and one gold star residences increased costs by 4.4%.

Profits

The daily average turnover of hotels per occupied room was 79.5 euros in June, an increase of 4.5% over the same month in the previous year.

Meanwhile, the average daily revenue per available room amounted to 55.5 euros, an increase of 10.9%.

By category, average turnover was 184.2 euros for five-star hotels, 86.5 euros for four stars and 64 euros for three star hotels. Revenue per available room for the same categories was 136.3, 69 and 47.3 euros respectively.
