Madrid received 4.2 million passengers in May

Spain’s airports received over 20 million passengers in May, an annual increase of 11.3%. The exact number of passengers recorded in May was 20,830,981.

The number of flight operations also increased with 5.5% more movements, when compared to the same month in 2015.

Passenger Numbers

By number of passengers, Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suarez was the busiest airport with more than 4.2 million passengers passing through in May, representing an increase over last year of 7.3%.

Barcelona-El Prat also witnessed growth registering an increase of 12.3% year-on-year, to reach 4 million passengers. Palma de Mallorca was the next busiest airport with 2.9 million passengers, an 11.3% annual increase, while Malaga-Costa del Sol airport received 1,626,519 passengers in May, a 12.2% increase. Judging by the traffic on Marbella’s roads in May, all 1.6 million people arrived on the same day!

Of the total passengers, over 20 million correspond to commercial flights, of which, just short of 15 million were international passengers, 11% more than in May 2015. 5.8 million passengers were on domestic flights, representing a 12% increase over the previous year.

Flights

There were 185,604 flight operation across the AENA network during May, 5.5% more than in the same month in the previous year.

Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas airport saw the highest number of take-offs and landings with 33,053 movements, a 3% annual increase, while Barcelona-El Prat saw 28,403 flight operations, a 5.7% annual increase. Gran Canaria and Alicante-Elche both also registered increases above 10% with flight operations in May growing by 15.4% and 12%, respectively.

Malaga-Costa del Sol and Palma de Mallorca also saw increased movements with 11,812 flights in Malaga, an increase of 9.3%, and 7,940 flights in Mallorca, an increase of 7.6%.

Year-To-Date

Cumulatively, for the first five months of 2016, Spain’s airports have received a massive 81.5 million passengers and moved 757,265 flights, increases of 11.9% and 7.1%, respectively.

The total number of flight movements from January to May was 757,264, representing an increase of 7.1% over the same period in 2015.

The growth in passenger numbers is reflective of continued security problems in other major tourist destinations within the Mediterranean, and also continuing low fuel prices.
