W Hotels are coming to Marbella

Marbella’s mayor attended the signing

Marbella’s new luxury hotel has taken a step closer. The mayor, José Bernal, and Minister for Tourism, Javier Porcuna, attended the signing of the agreement between Platinum Estates and the hotel group Marriott International Inc. for the development of W Hotels Marbella.

Platinum Estates already own several successful hotels around the world which are managed by groups including Hilton, Gran Plaza and Hyatt.

The group plan to build a five-star luxury hotel close to the Real Zaragoza dunes, an area of high ecological value. The hotel is due to open in summer 2019, with 600 rooms, following an investment in the region of 300 million euros. It is expected to be open all year round and could create thousands of jobs.

The mayor said the signing of the agreement “is the reward for a job that began in September 2015 when the investment group Platinum Estates first became interested in Marbella”.

Bernal also said that Marbella had accompanied the investment group throughout the process, including the election of the hotel brand, and had entered the agreement with the utmost caution and confidentiality to ensure the success of the project.

Leading Brand

The W Hotels chain is a leading brand in the hotel sector and its arrival in Marbella raises the quality on offer in the municipality, according to the town hall.

The hotel will be located next to the beach close to the Real Zaragoza dunes, covering an area of around 151,000 m² of land, of which 35% will be built on. The land was purchased for 50 million euros and the agreement to develop the area includes the development of infrastructure in the area. Construction will not exceed four storeys and the resort will also include gardens, services and roads.

Part of the agreement includes the conservation of the dunes, in collaboration with the organisation Pro-Dunas. The organisation won the Andalusian Environment Prize in 2012. They played a major role in Marbella’s dunes being declared as an ecological reserve.
