Tourists spent 7% more than in July 2015

Tourists spent 7% more than in July last year

Tourist spending increased in July this year reaching a total expenditure of 10,257 million euros, 7% more than in the same month last year, according to the latest figures released by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

The average expenditure per tourist fell slightly to 1,027 euros, a decline of 2.1%. However, the average daily spend increased by 5.5% to 130 euros.

The average length of stay for international tourists also fell slightly to 8.3 days. This represents a decline of 0.6 days when compared to July last year.

Cumulatively for the first seven months of 2016 total tourist expenditure has reached a massive 42,942 million euros, an increase of 7.9% over the same period in 2015.

Emitting Country

Tourists from the UK contributed the most to the total tourist spend. In July UK tourists accounted for 21.7% of the total. German tourists contributed 12.8%, while the French accounted for 9.6%.

Spending by UK tourists showed annual growth of 13%, while German tourists increased their spending by 0.4%. Tourists from France increased their spending the most with an annual increase of 19%. Tourists from Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden) increased spending by 14.9%. In contrast, spending by Italian tourists fell by 2.1%.

Over the first seven months of this year the UK remains as the largest contributor to tourist spending with 20.9% of the total. The Germans are next with 14.2%, followed by Nordic tourists with 8.5% of the total.

Destinations by Autonomous Community

The Balearic Islands were top of the list in July with 25.3% of total tourist expenditure. Catalonia followed with 24.6%, and the Canary Islands with 13.3%.

Spending on the Balearic Islands increased by 8.8%, while Catalonia saw spending increase by 3%. On the Canary Islands spending increased by 15.4%. Madrid also saw a significant increase in tourist spending with a 23.9% increase when compared to July 2015.

From January to July (inclusive) Catalonia has seen the majority of tourist spending accounting for 22.1% of the total. The Canary Islands are next with 19.6%.
