Brits accounted for 18.4% of the total spend

Total spending by international tourists visiting Spain in April reached 6.7 billion Euros, an increase of 19.7% when compared to the same month of 2016.

It is worth noting that Semana Santa (Easter) fell in April of this year whereas in 2016 it was in March.

The average expenditure per tourist was 955 euros, an annual increase of 3.2%. Average daily expenditure also increased with visitors spending 137 euros per day, 5.5% more than last year.

The average duration of stay was 7 days, which is a decrease of 0.2 days compared the the average last April, according to the latest figures from the INE.

Country of Origin

The United Kingdom was the largest source of tourists in terms of spending levels accounting for 18.4% of the total. German visitors accounted for 16.1%, while 9.5% were visiting from France.

The average spend of UK tourists grew with an annual variation of +7.7%. German spending increased by a massive 33.7%, while the French spent 7.6% more than in April 2016.

Destinations (Autonomous Communities)

The top three communities in terms of tourist spending in April were Catalonia, the Canary Islands and Andalusia, with 21.8%, 20% and 16.3% of the total spend, respectively.

Tourist spending increased by 20.3% in Catalonia, 20.1% in the Canary Islands and 10.9% in Andalusia.

January to April

Over the first four months of this year, the total expenditure by international tourists has increased by 15.3% compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 20,394 million euros.

For this period UK tourists accumulated the highest expenditure accounting for 18.9% of the total. Germany followed with 14%. Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden) accounted for 10.5%.

From January to April, the Canary Islands accumulated the most tourist spending with 27.8% of the total spend. Catalonia accumulated 21%, while Andalusia took 15.1% of the tourist pot.
