Hotels recorded 72.9% occupancy in July

If any of you attempted to drive anywhere in Spain during July you will know what I’m going to say here: July was a super busy month for tourism!

Spain’s hotels registered a massive 42.8 million overnight stays in July, representing a 7.4% increase over the same month in the previous year.

Overnight stays by those resident in Spain increased by 5.7% while overnight stays for international visitors increased by 8.2%.

Over the first seven months of this year overnight stays have increased by 8.9% when compared to July 2015.

Destinations

The most popular destinations for travellers resident in Spain were Andalucia, Valencia, Catalonia and the Canary Islands. All of those regions saw an increase in the number of overnight stays with positive growth of 0.4%, 7.3%, 9.1% and 1.0 %, respectively.

The main destination for international visitors was the Balearic Islands accounting for 34.6% of all overnight stays in July. Catalonia was next accounting for 20.9%, and representing annual growth of 6.4%. The Canary Islands also had a good month with 19.9% of overnight stays, an increase of 12.7% when compared to July 2015.

Occupancy Levels

In July 72.9% occupancy was recorded by Spanish hoteliers, an annual increase of 6%. When looking at weekend occupancy there was positive growth with a 5.2% increase, reaching 75.7% occupancy.

The Balearic Islands had the highest occupancy by available places with 91.4%. The Canary Islands followed with 84.9%, and Valencia with 77.9%.

The Costa del Sol recorded the highest number of overnight stays by tourist area with 2.3 million.

Barcelona, Madrid and Benidorm all showed positive growth in overnight stays in July.

Country of Origin

Travellers from the UK and Germany accounted for the most overnight stays for non-residents. The UK accounted for 27.4% while 20.8% were German.  The UK market grew by 9.6% while the German market grew by 4.1%.

Travellers from France, the Netherlands and Italy also showed annual growth with increases of 8.8%, 3.8% and 3.2%, respectively.
