Rural tourism continues to grow

Rural tourism continues to grow

As the Costa del Sol slips into May and the temperatures begin to climb Spain is preparing itself for the annual influx of tourists.

However, the mild months of March and April have already brought record numbers of travellers to our fine shores.

Holiday stays in apartments, campsites and rural tourism (non-hotel accommodation) have shown significant growth, especially regarding domestic tourism.

Indeed, during March rural tourism has shown growth of up to 366.82% when compared to March 2015, with a total of 4,080 people, up from 874. When looking at rural tourism from domestic travellers the numbers have tripled rising from just over four thousand in March 2015 to 12,213 this year, a massive 198.17% increase. Rural tourism from international travellers also increased significantly with 64.21% more visitors.

Campsites have also witnessed unprecedented growth over recent months. The number of domestic travellers to campsites almost doubled, up from 2,873 in March last year to 5,719 in March 2016. The number of overnight stays in these facilities increased by 78,73%, with 27,643 overnight stays recorded in March, compared to the 15,466 recorded in the same month last year.

International visitors to campsites also increased dramatically with increases of 42.8% in the number of campsite visitors and 2.78% in the number of overnight stays.

Travellers choosing to stay in apartment-type accommodation increased, although not to the same level as campsites. This type of accommodation showed an increase of 41.66% in the number of travellers (up to 22,825 this year from 16,112 in March 2015), while overnight stays increased by 66.39% (78,482 in March 2016 compared to 47,168 in March last year) confirming the excellent results for the tourism market during the first quarter of the year.

With marked increases in the numbers of international and domestic travellers, this data confirms the province of Malaga as a preferred destination for all, with visitors to the Costa del Sol enjoying the nature, gastronomy, culture, and of course beaches, that the region has to offer.
