Malaga City Council has taken the first steps to creating a new urban development in the city.

The project will create around 1,000 homes, most of which will be protected, although there will be free-rent properties included.

The council has selected five projects which will now be put out to tender to developers.

The project, dubbed Green Apple, will be located on land which is currently occupied by the Malagueña Transport Company and the Department of Operational Services. The council will move both (in principle, next to the auditorium) to enable the land to be sold to private investors. The plot will have an area of about 92,000 m².

The construction of the properties will be run by private developers who will have to develop five projects, each of which focuses on a different theme. The council expects to receive at least 100 proposals.

No Date Set

No date has been specified for starting the project. There is also no mention of the expected cost of moving the businesses currently occupying the land. It has insisted that construction of the new neighbourhood will not begin until the layout of the whole project is complete.

The council highlighted that the new properties will be developed under certain criteria. These will include sustainability and energy efficiency in the consumption of energy, water, and waste management.

This is encouraging news for the property market. New property has seen a resurgence over recent months with the horizon once again dotted with cranes as new homes spring up along the Costa del Sol.
