Málaga handled 7,647 flights in December

Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport exceeded 16 million passengers in 2016, thanks to growth in both the foreign and domestic markets. The total number of passengers to pass through the airport was 16,672,776, according to data from AENA. This represents an increase of 15.7% when compared to the previous year.

The bulk of those passengers (16,621,669) were travelling on commercial flights. Of those passengers, over 14 million were on international flights, an increase of 16.4% compared to 2015. Just over 2 million were on domestic flights, an increase of 11.7%.

The UK remains as the source for most international traffic in Spain accounting for almost 5.5 million passengers. German passengers were next at 1.4 million, followed by a little over a million French travellers. Dutch, Irish and Belgian travellers also made up just over 2 million passengers.

There were significant increases in the number of travellers emanating from Hungary (96.1%), Portugal (47.5%), the United States (45%) and Poland (37.3%).

Regarding the number of flight operations, Málaga airport managed 123,700 take-offs and landings in 2016 (118,923 commercial), an increase of 13.6% compared to the previous year.

Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport ended the year with a busy December. Almost one million passengers moved through, an increase of 21% compared to the previous December.

Of those passengers, 908,655 moved on commercial flights, with an increase of 23.8% in the number of international passengers, and an 8.6% increase in the number of domestic travellers.

In terms of flight numbers, Málaga airport handled 7,647 flights in December, exceeding the previous year by 21.2%.

December 22nd was the busiest day of the month in terms of flight numbers, mainly due to people heading off on their Christmas holidays. There were 319 flight operations on that day. The following day, the 23rd, was the busiest day for passenger numbers with 37,478 passing through the airport in a single day.
