Málaga Airport Saw 2 Million Passengers in July

Málaga Airport saw a 15% increase in passenger numbers

The last weekend of July was the busiest

Málaga Airport on the Costa del Sol recorded almost 2 million passengers passing through in July, 15.3% more than in the same month last year, according to data released by the airport network AENA.

There were over 14,000 flights passing through the airport, 12.3% more than in July 2015.

The majority of the passengers were on international flights (1.7 million) which is a 16.8% annual increase. The remaining passengers were on domestic flights flying between Spanish cities. This sector also saw growth with 4.4% more travellers. Despite this, there was actually 0.2% fewer domestic flight operations.

The UK remained as the main source of international travellers to Málaga accounting for almost 700,000 passengers. This was a 20.4% increase over last year. Germany was the next largest source accounting for 154,190 passengers while 127,011 French travellers passed through Málaga.

The last weekend of July proved to be the busiest with 502 flight operations. On Sunday July 31st only, almost 70,000 passengers passed through.

Cumulative Year-to-Date

Since January, almost 10 million passengers have passed through Málaga Airport. In the same period there were almost 70,000 flight operations. On the annual rate the number of passengers increased by 14.8% while there were 12% more flight operations than in the same period in the previous year.

Much of the growth can be attributed to the growth of tourism in Spain, and particularly the Costa del Sol, a result of tension and security concerns in other once-popular European destinations. However, cheaper flights and the proximity to the UK are also contributing factors. Then there is the weather, of course!
