Malaga saw over 2 million passengers in August

Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport handled 2,173,006 passengers in August, 11.3% more than in the same month in 2016, according to airport network AENA. This positive change was supported by the pull of the international market, as well as the dynamism of the domestic market.

The bulk of passengers (2,166,538) travelled on commercial flights. Of those, 1.9 million passengers were on international flights, while the remaining 262,650 travelled between Spanish airports. The number of international passengers increased by 12.7% compared to the previous August, while the number of domestic travellers increased by just under 3%.

Origin

The UK was the largest source of passengers in August with 738,854 Brits passing through Malaga airport. Germany accounted for 186,549 passengers, while 135,917 came from France. Other countries sending significant numbers were the Netherlands (129,154), Ireland (97,305) and Belgium (86,682).

The countries to show the largest increase in the number of passengers travelling to Malaga were led by Israel from which passenger numbers doubled. Following were Canada (66%), Morocco (54.6%), Sweden (42.1%), Romania (39.3%) and the Netherlands (34.8%). The rise of Italy (29.3%), Slovakia (26.2%), United States (25.7%) and Russia (21.2%) was also significant.

According to the cities of origin / destination with the largest passenger numbers at Malaga Airport last month, the most notable were London, Amsterdam, Manchester, Dublin, Barcelona, Birmingham, Paris, Brussels and Copenhagen.

Flights

Regarding flight operations, in August there were 15,485 take-offs and landings at the airport (14,884 of them being commercial), an increase of 9.8% over the previous year.

August 6, the first Sunday of the month, was the busiest day for airport staff dealing with 78,255 passengers and 553 flights.

2017

The good performance in August contributed to the fact that the accumulated data of travellers during the first eight months of the year was very positive. Thus, the Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport recorded 12,755,059 passengers from January to August, 12.8% more than in the same period of 2016.

Of the 12,718,767 users who moved on commercial flights, 11,091,369 did so with destination or origin in a foreign city (14.1% more) and 1,627,398, flying within Spain (5.2% more).

In terms of operations, there were 93,528 flights (89,842 of them being commercial), an increase of 11.7% compared to January-August last year.
