Málaga saw 1.7 million passengers in September

The Costa del Sol’s Málaga airport closed September with yet another increase in passenger traffic and the number of flight operations.

Over 1.7 million passengers passed through, carried on 12,401 flights, according to data from the airport network AENA.

The number of passengers increased 15.9%, while flight operations increased 14.7%, when compared to September 2015.

The majority of passengers were carried on commercial flights, accounting for 1,774,388. Of those, 1,559,730 were on international flights, representing an increase of 17% over the same month in the previous year.

The remaining 214,658 passengers were on Spanish domestic flights arriving from other airports within Spain. This represented an annual increase of 8.3% in passenger numbers, and a 3.6% increase in the number of flights.

Passenger Origin

The UK was the main source for international passengers arriving at Málaga with 633,145 Brits descending on the coast. This represented an annual increase of 19.8%, despite Brexit fears and the falling value of the pound.

The German and French markets also increased. There were 151,656 German passengers and 112,619 French.

The first three Saturdays of the month were the busiest for Málaga Airport. The busiest day of the month was Saturday 10th. On that Saturday almost 70,000 passengers passed through. They were carried on 465 flight operations. Saturday 3rd and Saturday 17th recorded similarly high numbers.

January to September, 2016

Over the first nine months of the year Málaga airport has serviced 13 million passengers, carried on more than 96,000 flights.

The number of passengers represents an increase of 14.6%, when compared to the same period in 2015. The number of flights showed an annual increase of 12%.
