Improvements Planned for San Pedro de Alcántara

The New Boulevard in San Pedro de Alcantara

San Pedro’s New Boulevard

The money continues to rain down on San Pedro de Alcántara as yet more redevelopment work is announced.

In recent years, the town has been transformed. First there was the addition of a tunnel beneath the town to alleviate heavy traffic passing through. Then came the new boulevard which has become a popular meeting point and night-spot for many locals in the town.

There are now plans in place to semi-pedestrianise the roads running between the town centre and the boulevard. The aim is to improve access and safety.

Updated Infrastructure

The main street running from Plaza de la Iglesia down to the boulevard, Avenida Marques del Duero, is already pedestrianised at the top, from the square down to Calle del Pozo. The new plans include new pavements, updated street furniture and signage, as well as refurbishment of the sanitation network, telecommunications infrastructure and natural gas network.

New lighting, irrigation and electricity infrastructure are also included in the plans.

Once the pavements have been widened there are plans to eliminate surface parking, making the area more pedestrian-friendly.

There are also plans for a new museum dedicated to the Spanish painter and sculptor Vicente de Espona.

The work, paid for by the Provincial Council, will cost €1,090,566 and has been awarded to the company Obras Generales del Norte. Work will begin in February and is expected to last around 10 months.

A further million euros of investment is planned for improvements to Calle Andalucia and Avenida de la Constitucion. Details of this are yet to be released.
