Hotels saw 30.8 million overnight stays in May

Spain’s hotels accommodated 30.8 million overnight stays in May, a 9.9% increase over the same month in the previous year. Stays by travellers who are resident in Spain increased by 6.1%, while overnight stays by non-resident travellers increased by 11.6%.

The average length of stay was 3.2 nights per traveller, an increase of 4.7% over May 2015.

Cumulatively, overnight stays in the first five months of 2016 showed a year-on-year increase of 9.5%.

Destinations

Here we find the usual suspects; Andalusia, Catalonia, Valencia and Madrid were the most popular destinations for traveller’s resident in Spain. All showed positive growth with increases in the number of overnight stays of 12.3%, 9.4% ,5.7% and 2.6%, respectively.

The destination chosen by the most non-resident travellers was the Balearic Islands, accounting for 31.3% of all overnight stays in May, representing an increase of 16.8% when compared to the same month in 2015.

The Canary Islands also had a busy month in May accounting for 21.3% of all overnight stays, an increase of 16.1%, followed by Catalonia which took 17.5% of the total, an increase of 4.9%.

Occupancy

Hotels recorded an average of 58.3% occupancy in May, an annual increase of 8.2%. When looking only at weekend occupancy, the numbers increase to 65.9% occupancy, an annual increase of 5.3%.

The Canary Islands claimed the highest average occupancy rate with 73.1%, followed by the Balearic Islands with 70.4% and Madrid with 62.3%.

The island of Lanzarote recorded the highest degree of occupancy by available places with 78%. Barcelona recorded the highest weekend occupancy with 81%.

By number of overnight stays per region, the Costa del Sol recorded the highest figure with more than 1.8 million overnight stays.

Country of Origin

Travellers from the UK and Germany accounted for the most overnight stays with 28.1% and 24.9% of the total, respectively, for non-resident travellers. The UK market grew by 11.8%, while the German market grew by 15.2%.

The number of travellers from the Netherlands and Italy recorded increases of 14.5% and 3.6%, respectively, while the French market contracted slightly with a 4.8% decrease.

Hotel Prices

The annual rate of the Hotel Price Index stood at 5.4% in May which is 2.5 points higher than the previous month and 1.3 points higher than the previous year.

Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, Andalusia and the Canary Islands are the communities with the highest weighting in the HPI in May, representing 71.1% of total weight. Hoteliers in the Balearic Islands saw prices increase by 7.5%, on the annual rate, while prices in the Canary Islands increased by 7.4%. Andalusia and Catalonia also saw prices rise with 5.2% and 3.9% increases, respectively.

By hotel rating, prices increased in all categories. Five-gold-star hotels increased prices by 4.8%, four-gold-star hotels prices grew by 6.1%, three-gold-stars by 5.3%, two-gold-stars by 3.3%, and one-gold-star increased by 0.8%.

Profitability

The average daily turnover of hotels per occupied room was 74.2 euros in May, representing an increase of 3.8% over the same month in the previous year.

The average daily turnover per available room amounted to 48.2 euros, an annual increase of 13%.

By category, average daily turnover for five-star hotels was 174.2 euros, 78.7 euros for four-star hotels and 58.7 euros for three-star establishments. Per available room, five-star hotels average turnover was 124.6 euros, 58.7 euros for four-star hotels and 39.5 euros for three-star accommodation.
