The Balearic Islands saw a 61.7% rise in sales

April 2016 registered an increase in the number of house sales of 29%, when compared to the same month in the previous year, according to data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

In total, there were 153,060 property transfers in April, which represents a 15.4% increase in total property transfers over April 2015.

Of the total properties purchased in April, 84.7% related to urban properties, while 15.3% were rustic properties. In the case of urban properties, 55.4% were for house sales.

The number of rustic property sales represents an increase of 11.9% year-on-year, while the amount of urban properties sold represented an increase of 31.9%. Within the urban sales the number of houses sold increased by 29%.

From March to April, the increase is 10.3%, which is 10.5 points higher than the previous year, and the largest increase in the previous 12 months.

Community Sales

When looking at the number of sales by autonomous community per 100,000 residents, we see the highest numbers in La Rioja (688), Castile and Leon (669), and Aragon (642).

In terms of annual variation, we see the largest increase in Valencia which recorded 41.3% more property sales in April, compared to the same month last year. The Balearic Islands followed with an increase of 34.4%.

There were only two communities to register negative rates with Asturias seeing a decline of 13.7% while the number of sales in Galicia fell by 3.4%.

When looking solely at house sales, the largest numbers were in Valencia (138) and the Balearic Islands with 138 and 129 sales, respectively.

In terms of the annual change in the number of house sales, the Balearic Islands came out on top with a massive 61.7% increase, followed by Galicia where house sales increased by 51.6%.

The lowest annual increases were seen in, surprisingly, the Canary Islands with a marginal 2% increase, and the Basque Country with an increase of 12%.
