Almost 10 Million Tourists Visited in July

Tourist numbers increased in July

2.4 million visited the Balearic Islands

July was another great month for tourism with 9.6 million international tourists visiting Spain. This was a massive 9.3% more than in the same month in the previous year.

Many people predicted that July would be busy in the wake of recent terror scares in other countries such as Turkey, Cyrpus and Egypt. They were right.

As expected, the UK was the country of origin for the majority of visitors with 2.1 million Brits arriving in July. This represented 23% of the total and was 11.4% higher than in the same month last year.

France and Germany also contributed a substantial number of tourists with both countries showing an increase over last year. French tourists accounted for 1.5 million visitors, 13.8% more than July 2015. Germans made up 1.2 million visitors, an annual increase of 3.5%.

Other countries to show significant increases in numbers were Portugal (+19.8%) and the USA (+15.8%).

Year to Date

So far this year, the number of tourists visiting Spain has reached a massive 42.4 million, an 11.1% annual increase. With Spain having a population of just under 47 million the tourists have almost outnumbered the locals this year!

Tourists visiting from the UK have totalled 10.1 million so far this year, a 15.3% increase when compared to the first seven months of 2015. The German market has sent 6.2 million tourists, an increase of 6%, while French visitors amount to 6.1 million, an increase of 9.5%.

Catalonia attracted the most tourists in July accounting for 25.3% of the total. The Balearic Islands followed with 24.7% of the total, while 12.7% of visitors chose Andalusia for their visit.

Catalonia received 2,422,110 tourists in July, representing a 3.8% increase over last year. The main country of residence for those visiting Catalonia was France accounting for 23.5% of visitors, while the UK accounted for 10.6%.

The number visiting the Balearic Islands increased by 11.3% reaching close to 2.4 million. 29.1% of those came from the UK while 28.8% were from Germany.

Andalusia received 1.2 million people in July, annual growth of 10.9%. The UK accounted for the majority of those visitors with 30.1% of the total. The French made up 12%.

Other communities to see significant increases were the Canary Islands (+21%), Madrid (+16.2%) and Valencia (+13.4%).
