Madrid was the busiest airport in June

Airports in the AENA network recorded more than 22.3 million passengers in June, an increase of 10.7%.

The number of commercial flight movements increased by 7.3%.

The busiest airport in June was Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas with more than 4.4 million passengers.

January to June 2016 has seen more than 103.8 million passengers, an 11.7% increase over the previous year.

The total number of passengers to pass through Spanish airports, within the AENA network, was 22,325,255 in June, representing an increase of 10.7% over the same month in the previous year, according to the latest data released by AENA.

The data suggests the trend seen in recent months continues with many people choosing Spain over other once popular destinations due to security concerns. Low fuel prices are also said to be a contributing factor.

Of the total number of passengers, over 16 million were on international flights, 11.1% more than last year, with 6.1 million domestic flights, a 10% increase.

Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport saw the greatest number of passengers with more than 4.4 million passing through in June representing a 6.6% increase over the previous year. June becomes the 29th consecutive month of positive growth in passenger numbers at Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas airport.

Barcelona-El Prat Airport was the next busiest with over 4.1 million passengers moving through in June, 10% more than in the same month of 2015. Palma de Mallorca followed with 3.3 million (+10.9%). On the Costa del Sol, Malaga airport welcomed 1.6 million passengers representing annual growth of 14.2%, while Alicante-Elche saw 15.7% more passengers, reaching 1.2 million.

Cumulatively for the first six months of 2016, airport traffic has increased by 11.7% reaching a huge 103.8 million passengers.

Flight Movements

In June there were almost 200,000 flight movements, 7.3% more than last year. In terms of the number of take-offs and landings, Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas once again tops the list with 32,939 flights, a 1.4% increase over June 2015.

Barcelona-El Prat saw over 28,000, a 4.3% increase, while Palma de Mallorca registered 23,536 flights, an increase of 11.7%. Malaga-Costa del Sol handled 12,093 flights, 12.1% more than last year, while Alicante-Elche recorded 8,633, a 16.8% increase.

So far this year, AENA airports have handled a total of 952,917 flight operations, an increase of 7.2% over the same period in the previous year.
